Crane Creations – Play Date – Oct 20

October 20, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm EDT

Free

Play Date is an online monthly play reading club by Crane Creations Theatre Company
where you can read or listen to a play, live on Zoom. Play Date is a great activity if you
want to practice English by reading aloud, are a lover of theatre and want to read great
plays from around the world, or want to connect with other people.
This month we are reading Familiar written by Danai Gurira.

About the Play: Danai Gurira’s play, Familiar received its world premiere at Yale
Repertory Theatre directed by Rebecca Taichamn. The play is about a Zimbabwean
family that is preparing for the wedding of their eldest daughter, Tendikayi (addressed as
Tendi in the play), who is a first-generation American. Throughout the play, there is a
conflict between traditional Zimbabwean wedding practices that her family wants her to
participate in and traditional Christain wedding practices that Tendi wants to do. The
play revolves around African-American identity and the clashing cultures and traditions.
