“Campaign available through the islamophobia.io website run by Asim Hussain, where interested individuals can share stories
A Mississauga-based artist is trying to raise the understanding of Muslims and non-Muslims about the community’s holy month Ramadan through a storytelling campaign.
Asim Hussain says the campaign began on Thursday, March 23 and will last until the end of the month on April 20.
“Not even water? is the most famous question on the planet about Ramadan. But Ramadan is so much more than not eating and drinking,” Hussain said in an email.
The campaign is available through the islamophobia.io website run by Hussain, where interested individuals can share their stories about what Ramadan means to them.
“No matter what your background is, you might have experienced Ramadan in some way. If you have, then you probably have a story,” Hussain added.
Aneesa Hussain, a Grade 6 student in Mississauga, shared what the month means for her in a poem, part of which reads:
“Ramadan is about being kind,
“It’s about praying and being on time,
“Been fasting since I was 9,
“It’s about giving Zakat ‘cuz it’s not just mine!
“This is the month I’m ‘tryna find.”

“We already have over 300 incredible stories submitted by the public in a collective pursuit to create better understanding, and counter Islamophobia,” Hussain stated.
Asim Hussain — who introduces himself as @studentAsim — says he is a multidisciplinary artist, which includes writing, print and installation work, and exploring filmmaking.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are obliged to avoid eating or drinking from early morning until evening.”
