The art was chosen through an international design competition

“Mississauga has received its first colourful winterland public art stations.

The project, which includes a multicoloured wooden lighthouse called — Delighthouse — and a sculpture that features a yellow curved wooden ramp called 3 Surfaces Pavilion, was launched on March 28 and will be on display until the end of May.

These artworks were chosen after an international design competition featuring local and international designers, according to a news release.

“We hope through this show we can demonstrate how important public art is,” said Dakota Wares-Tani, who is part of the sculpture organizing committee.

The artworks will be visible on the front lawn of the Small Arms building, directly across the Exhale Residences on Lakeshore Road. Delighthouse is by Nick Green and Greig Pirrie from the U.K. and 3 Surfaces Pavilion is by S-AR: Cesar Guerrero, Ana Cecilia Garza and Orlando Garcia from Mexico.

“While traditionally lighthouses are warnings, this installation is a welcoming beacon of hope, fun, energy, and pride,” explained Green and Pirrie. “The confident and colourful pattern, evoking a sense of play, casts onto ground panels radiating out from the tower to embrace visitors.”

While these pieces have already been displayed in Woodbine Beach in Toronto, this is the first time they will be on show in Mississauga. The decision to bring them to Peel region was instigated by real estate company Brixen Developments.

“We are encouraging people to come out and view these fun, colourful installations and are hopeful they would inspire a sense of happiness and joy for the people in this neighbourhood,” said Alexander D’Orazio, co-founder of Brixen Developments, in the release. “As a company that values community engagement and cultural enrichment, we also hope that the art plays a crucial role in enhancing this area and the city of Mississauga.”

Winter Stations was launched by three firms: RAW Design, Ferris + Associates, and Curio in 2015. Each year, hundreds of submissions are delivered from architecture and design firms worldwide, centring on a certain theme. This year’s theme was radiance. Five winning designs were selected, alongside three student designs from Toronto Metropolitan University, Waterloo Department of Architecture and Guelph University.

“We can’t wait to see how the people of Mississauga react to the installation,” said Green.”
