April marks Jazz Appreciation Month – shorter to JAM – started in 2001 at the National Museum of American History and has since been recognized worldwide.
Mississauga has a long history of Jazz in the city. From multiple locales that play and host jazz sessions to iconic performers that have emerged from the city, there’s no shortage of Jazz opportunities here!
The city of Mississauga is home to many talents who were born or grew up here and of those includes icon jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson, a Mississauga resident for over 35 years. His contribution to the music scene is of the rarest standard for any Canadian performer and anyone listening to his work can attest to its lasting and joyful nature. The city also boasts performances left and right throughout its Port Credit bars, with the annual Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz festival, and with bands like Mississauga Big Band Jazz who perform routinely at the Port Credit Legion. Here in Mississauga, JAM is being celebrated with a variety of events all month long!
Grammy, JUNO and MARTY Award-winning vocalist, Liberty Silver will perform at the West Vocal Jam on April 15. Not only will there be a featured performance, but other jazz artists will have the chance to perform one song each with a backing band consisting of Jazz pianist Peter Hill on keys and Clark Johnston on acoustic bass. Other performances include Dionne Grant, Heidi Cyfko, Jamie Poon, Cat Bernardi, Denise Leslie, Catie Westrope, Jennifer Cortez, Emily Falls Klatt, Lindsay Rolland-Mills, Francine Hailman, Carla Gonzalez, Stephanie Kathryn and more!

On April 14, check out Jazz at the Port Credit Legion where you can enjoy live music and a newly renovated dance floor, perfect for dancers!
At the RBC theatre, in Mississauga’s downtown, enjoy the classic sounds of Benny Goodman with Ken Peplowski and band on April 13!
The Mississauga Big Band Jazz Ensemble is hosting a Big Band Open Mic also on April 13 in Cooksville!
