We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. Cynthis Ozick

Things can change in an instant. Everything is going along even if not merrily, it is rolling along. Then we get the phone call, someone is in the hospital or didn’t even make it to the hospital. Our newborn baby has an infection, whatever it is, it catches us off guard.

Our newborn grandson went into the hospital with a urinary tract infection, he is doing well not looking or acting like a sick baby and so today we hope he will be released and put on oral antibiotics instead of the drip he’s on at the hospital. At eight days old he wasn’t the youngest patient in the pediatric wing.

I was able to get in to see him and his mother and the Pediatrician checked him while I was in the room reassuring us he was doing well and they were waiting for more tests. The tests came back yesterday with the type of urinary tract infection they expected and my daughter tells me she expects her son to be discharged soon.

As my daughter is not a patient she is not fed at the hospital but as his sole source of nourishment her husband took her food during the day and I take her food during the evening. Last night I prepared her dinner, my husband made the appointment to visit but when I got to the hospital my name was not on the list of visitors, and when I spoke to the pediatric unit I was not able to visit as he has two primary visitors his mom and dad, and no others are allowed.

Start each day with a positive thought and a grateful heart. Roy T. Bennett

I was shown where to drop off the food, and a nurse came and picked it up. I called my daughter as I walked out of the hospital. I was thankful I could visit her the night before when she didn’t know what was happening, it was already starting to look good from tests that did come back, and the Pediatrician was very reassuring, but then that is their job, and they are very good at it.

Serendipity works in our lives, they weren’t looking for a urinary tract infection when they did the urine test at the emergency. His doctor wanted a second opinion on a video of his breathing, taken during the night. The last test they did was the urine test showing a urinary tract infection. By catching it early he is being treated before it becomes a problem.

We are so blessed to be able to have this treated before it becomes a real problem. Treatable infections still cause many deaths. Childbirth is still a huge risk for women in some parts of the world. We are so blessed to know our daughters will survive a difficult birth, and their babies will be treated for infections if they develop.

I sit here today as a grateful grandma.  We are looking forward to a happy Easter; hopefully, my daughter and her son will be home with us. The scariest part is waiting for tests not knowing what has to be dealt with. Now that the tests are in we can relax a little.

Have a happy Easter. As we gather together this Easter we will feel even a little more blessed to share time with each and every person at our table.
