The many faces of our humanity, the human form, the spaces we inhabit and fill with our vitality and verve – these are the amulets of existence on this earth when all else is stripped away. From cave drawings to formal portraiture, people and their daily activities are recorded. The soft pastels Degas used to render the grace of ballet dancers are iconic works, as are Karsh’s photographic portraits.

In our homes and museums, glimpses of how life was lived are revealed in our ancestors’ albums and the paintings hung on our walls or art galleries. Imagine what future anthropologists might say about the current photographic obsession to document our most intimate moments, or the many gigabytes needed to store and share our endless collections of ‘Selfies’.

Street photography is emerging as a vibrant art form globally. It can unite us when we view those different faces in other parts of the world engaged in many of the same daily tasks; food shopping, tilling the land, navigating traffic, children playing.

This all attests to the past and present fascination with the human face and form as we pursue our daily lives and engage with each other in community.
