Jurors (left to right): Ed Pien, Sara Mozafari, and Noni Kaur

JURORS:

Ed Pien is a Taiwanese-born Canadian artist who received an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Western University and an MFA from York University. He has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including at the Drawing Centre in NYC, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the National Art Gallery of Canada. His solo exhibition Shadowed Land was held at the AGM in 2016. He has also participated in biennials in Montreal, Sydney, Moscow, Beijing, Curitiba, and Asunción. Pien’s work is collected by various institutions and private collectors. He is represented by Birch Contemporary in Toronto, Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain in Montreal, and Galerie Maurits van de Laar in The Hague. He was a Visiting Artist Professor at Concordia University and has taught part-time at the University of Toronto until 2018. Pien’s work explores the notion of time, the sentience of nature, as well as memory, the representation of trauma, resilience, and empathy.

Sara Mozafari was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. Mozafari’s art is intricately woven into the country’s narrative, shaped by the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution, encompassing women and ethnic and religious minorities’ struggles, political oppression, and the shadow of the Iran-Iraq War. Immigrating to Canada at 25, she carried her homeland’s legacy, fueling her interdisciplinary artistry spanning performance, installation, painting, drawing, architecture, textile, and ceramics. Mozafari is a Visual Arts PhD candidate at York University, where she explores the impact of art, architecture, and urban spaces on gender dynamics and marginalized voices. Her narrative-rich art and scholarly pursuits reveal the interplay of personal history and societal relations, beckoning reflection on the links between identity and the world’s intricate tapestry. Mozafari was the first-place winner in the AGM’s 2022 Juried Show of Visual Arts.

Noni Kaur is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist and educator. Kaur’s works are an embodiment of her response to intersectional identity across cultures and communities. Her immersive, reactive, multi-sensory installations bridge gaps between gender, culture, the body, and the non-human world. Through her expansive, topographical landscapes of desiccated coconut installations, Kaur explores intersectionality through her heritage that result in her bold cellular mapping works stemming from being a Singaporean woman of Punjabi descent in Canada. Kaur’s work has been featured in public galleries and international venues including the Havana Biennale, Cuba; the Asian Art Biennale, Dhaka, Bangladesh; the Fukuoka Triennale, Asian Art Museum, Japan; White Columns, New York; the Henie Onstad Kunstenter, Oslo, Norway; Art Gallery of Mississauga; Art Gallery of Burlington; Station Gallery, Whitby; and the Royal Ontario Museum, among others. Kaur is based in Mississauga, Ontario.
