Mondo Forma, The Daniels Corporation (Daniels) and Oxford Properties (Oxford) are on a mission to honor the diverse cultural heritage of Mississauga at Condominiums at Square One District with a large-scale art installation that celebrates the city’s cultural communities’ diverse histories and traditions.

The art installation, titled “Weaving Our Cultural Fabric” is a study of patterns found in traditional dress, textiles and cultural art. Over 50% of Mississauga residents identify as newcomers and immigrants. With this in mind, Mondo Forma was inspired by the art of patchwork quilting, which is found in many cultures across the world.

In many ways, Mississauga can be thought of as a beautiful patchwork quilt. Patchwork quilts are treasured for creating a sum that is greater than its parts. This art piece is about uniting the community’s diverse origins in a unique and colourful way.

This Open Community Call invites Mississaugans to share the narratives that connect residents to their cultural roots, family, and community. Anyone with a treasured heirloom, a piece of clothing, a family recipe that tells a story about their heritage, or any such item is invited to share their story.

Participants are asked to fill out a survey form, and include a photo or video of a treasured cultural artifact to help share its story and its details. Some of the stories will be selected to be included within a 3D sculptural art project produced by Mondo Forma in partnership with Daniels and Oxford. Aspects of selected pieces, textiles or patterns will be interpreted by Mississauga artists to be included within the sculptural installation.

Every story you share is like a thread in a tapestry that tells the story of Mississauga’s past, present, and future. By joining us, you’re helping to weave a beautiful narrative that celebrates the vibrant and diverse cultural fabric of our city.

Thanks for sharing your stories at this LINK by October 25th!
