Bird Flutes and Birding with Deep Ganguly – Riverwood Conservancy

August 18, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm EDT

$10

August 18 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

$10 – Youth (aged 16 and under) get in free.

Join the Bird Flute Man, Deep Ganguly, to explore the communication of birds through handmade bamboo flutes.

Have you ever wondered what birds are saying to each other? Why do they make certain sounds? Come and discover the exciting bird sounds, songs, calls, chatters, and trills. Followed by a walk around Riverwood to explore some of these sounds organically.
The goal is not to learn unique bird songs, but rather to grasp the nuances of rhythms, tones, and intensity utilized for communication purposes among bird species.

Bird flutes will be on display for you to touch and listen to. All ages are welcome to this program, especially curious children. Some of the bird flutes present will include blue jay, Canada goose, wrens, sparrows and more!

To learn more, watch this short video.

Important Information

Binoculars are available to borrow for the duration of the program.  A bird checklist and map will be provided to newcomers to the program.

Dress for the weather. This is a rain or shine event, unless severe weather is in the forecast. We recommend wearing all-weather shoes, or bringing a walking stick.

No dogs permitted.

Difficulty Rating

Easy. This program will take place on the Chappell Lawn for the flute session, followed by birding on the flat trail on the upper terrace of Riverwood.

About the Presenter

Deep Ganguly comes from a tradition of bamboo flautists, of the Indian classical music tradition. From a young age the bansuri, or the Indian bansuri, captured his imagination. He learned the bansuri from his guru, the late Pandit Malhar Rao Kulkarni, a serious teacher of the bansuri who taught this wonderful wind instrument in the tradition of the Guru-Shisya Parampara (teacher-disciple tradition). Deep is connected to select music therapy clinics in Toronto where he lends his gift of bansuri sounds towards healing through music.
