Connecting Mississauga to the arts, and the arts to Mississauga and beyond
Join Martys HUBDo you remember a time or place you miss or love most but have been disconnected from? With everything going on in the world, we all have our form of a border-crossing story. There is a sense of longing for what once was, and during this workshop, Jeanette Ricasio shows us how to relate art to bringing us back to that time or place.
It’s about capturing the scenery we long for and turning that feeling into a “living art.”
For example, you’ve come to Canada as your border crossing story, but you still miss the Philippines, the tropics and the scents. By creating lush mossy frames, we are brought back to that place we remember.
Participants are asked to have the following materials on hand for the workshop.
Materials
– Picture Frame (recycled preferred)
– Glue or hot glue gun
– Cardboard to protect working surface
– artificial moss
– Branches, stones or another décor to represent the feeling or location you’re
symbolizing.
(Participants can also bring plants or paints to enhance their frames)

IN THE EYES OF THE FACILITATOR – Jeanette Ricasio
At some point, we have felt intimidated to attempt an art piece. My work is a constant trial of beginnings, hence my range of artwork. I have experimented with acrylic and watercolour painting, illustration, pour art, artificial moss frames, terrariums, cement planters, clay coasters, miniatures, and DIY wall art that includes macramé. My inspiration comes from anywhere, including plants, music, self-reflection, other artists and more. When I see something exciting or fascinating, I want to try it and persevere through the research process and practice to make it.
Beginning each piece is a practice on its own. I hope that through my work, others can feel inspired to overcome doubt on attempting an art piece and feel proud of what they create. No matter how small the step, I’d love for them to celebrate that they took that step, which is fulfilling for me as an artist.
