To coincide with the fall season opening night at the Portuguese Cultural Centre of Mississauga (PCCM), the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Official Attempt for the Title of the Largest Portuguese Folk Dance, originally scheduled for June 5th, 2022, will now take place on Saturday, September 17, 2022.
The PCCM is thrilled to share that we have reached almost fifty percent of our target goal of dancers including participants from other Ontario Portuguese folklore groups, families, individuals, and the broader Mississauga community. We are calling on dancers of all levels to register today for only $25 to help us surpass our goal and become a part of history! Free dance lessons are available at the PCCM led by our folklore teachers or virtually. The registration fee will go towards covering expenses and proceeds will support the Canadian Cancer Society, Community Living Mississauga, and Luso Charitable Society.
The current record stands at 774 people simultaneously performing a Portuguese folk dance for 5 minutes. We set a goal to have 850 people dancing to the very traditional and well known “Vira”, also known as the Portuguese Waltz, simultaneously for 7 minutes total. Before and after the Official Attempt, the afternoon will be filled with Portuguese heritage, culture, food and a variety of entertainment.
We are passionate about giving back to our community and this event will focus on raising awareness and honouring those with physical and mental health limitations as we will be:
