Job Summary
The City of Mississauga is located within the Treaty and Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Anishnaabe, Ojibwa/Chippewa, Haudenosaunee, and Huron-Wendat peoples. Are you ready to work to strengthen relationships between Indigenous communities and the City of Mississauga? Join us to help ensure Indigenous voices are heard on a variety of municipal projects. We assist and guide the City’s various departments to ensure that the City meets the best practices of engaging and working through our journey of Truth and Reconciliation. Goals include strengthening relations with local First Nations and urban Indigenous residents, ensuring compliance with Provincial requirements, incorporating Indigenous perspectives into effective City services, and leading our Indigenous Relations Working Group.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate guidance and advice to all City Departments pertaining to Indigenous communities and Indigenous residents including;
- Duty to Consult and Engagement;
- Best practices in communicating effectively with Indigenous communities;
- Best practices in organizing and managing municipal projects to ensure Indigenous perspectives are included.
- Lead and manage projects supporting strategic outcomes for the City;
- Liaise with Indigenous community groups, Friendship Centre(s) and residents and guide other City departments on best practices for liaising with Indigenous communities;
- Assist in the development of policy and protocol, leading to a strengthened relationship with all Indigenous partners;
- Conduct research and analysis on a wide range of Indigenous projects and tasks;
- Assist with outreach and administrative activities for Indigenous Relations;
- Process, and write, staff reports to committees and Council, including the City’s annual Reconciliation Report,
- Respond to internal and external inquiries.
- Remain current on issues which impact local Indigenous communities and relations between municipal and Indigenous communities.
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience liaising and working with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs, Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation, Huron-Wendat First Nation, and all other communities with Traditional territory within the City of Mississauga;
- Lived experience within the dynamics of building relationships and reconciliation between communities;
- Experience with leading and managing projects to completion;
- A clear understanding of Municipal requirements for Engagement under all relevant Provincial legislation;
- University degree in Indigenous studies, political science, municipal affairs, urban geography, history, planning, and/or a related field is beneficial, or an equivalent combination of education, training and related experience,
- A high level of fluency and ability to learn quickly in a digital office environment;
- Good composition and editing skills;
- Ability to successfully work with internal and external clients
- Experience with the Microsoft Office suite is beneficial
