“Artists from Brampton and Mississauga did their hometowns proud after winning at the 2023 Juno Awards in Edmonton over the weekend.
Mississauga keyboardist Anthony Carone won in the Group of the Year category with his Arkells bandmates. This is Arkells’ sixth group of the year win, a new Juno record, and their third in a row.
Also among this year’s winners were Nigerian Canadian Brampton artist TOBi for Rap album/EP of the Year (Shall I Continue?). Originally from Lagos, he was also nominated for Songwriter of the Year.
Reggae Recording of the Year (Reggae Party) went to Jamaican-born Brampton’s Kirk Diamond. This is Diamond’s second Juno win, after winning in the same category in 2018 for the EP Greater.
Brampton’s Jessie Reyez also won in the Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year category for Yessie. Reyez has collaborated and will be touring with Grammy winner Sam Smith this summer. She also appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” back in January.
